For the record, I hate running.
This year, Im partaking in this years Edinburgh Half Marathon to raise money and awareness for the Scottish Association for Mental Health (http://www.samh.org.uk/). SAMH are dedicated to mental health and well-being for all. Their vision is of a society where people are able to live their lives fully regardless of present or past circumstances. Personally, I think that alone is worth supporting its such a lovely sentiment.
I know plenty of people that have been impacted by mental illness be it post natal depression, stress, suicide, or anxiety. Some have been affected personally and some have looked after friends and family that have been affected. Only the other day a friend told me about what they were going through and how they were worried about telling their boss. We wouldnt think twice about telling a boss about something like breaking a leg, but mental health is still stigmatised and seen by some as a failing. Frankly, this view is unacceptable.
Each time I have to lug my carcass out on a run I procrastinate as long as possible, however knowing that by running I might raise awareness of the good work that SAMH do helps me to get out the door. After all, SAMH seek to: campaign for rights and rights-based services, challenge stigma and discrimination and promote inclusion. Great stuff.
The Scottish Government recognises that mental illness is one of the major public health challenges in Scotland; estimating that around one in three people are affected by mental illness in any one year. In reality though, it affects everyone.
So, Im hoping to lift awareness and raise some money in the process in my little part of the world by running 21.1 km on the 25th May. I know its no marathon, but then Im no runner either!!
Please help me reach my goal!
Thanks very much,
Rachel
