The global pandemic has highlighted that we live at a time where politics, lifestyle and economics have created global crises of health, deep divisions and conflict in our society. Fear, anger and intolerance are prominent in our public narrative, which focuses on individual successes, not universal wellbeing. In this environment, our children face isolation and ever-more complex futures. Increasing numbers are diagnosed every year with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. There is a critical need now to help children manage their emotions, develop social skills and build the capacity to be kind and resilient.
Since 2017, the DLCC has concentrated on compassion in schools via its education project: Compassion Matters. The project is building a society with compassion at its core by providing schools and other education organisations with an innovative learning programme. Our aim is to help create a kinder and happier society by showing our children what compassion is and by inspiring them to lead compassionate lives.
Compassion to ourselves, each other and planet has a key role as ‘guide star’ in our recovery from the events of 2020 and become part of the ‘new normal’ with which we move forward.
