I'm running the London Marathon on Sunday 13th April 2014 to raise money for Medecins Sans Frontieres. Medecins Sans Frontieres give neutral, independent and impartial medical aid where it is needed most.
I attempted to run a marathon back in September and it didn't go ENTIRELY to plan. I finished it, but - after heading out too fast, drinking too much sports drink (see photo!), vomitting and rolling my ankle - I essentially walked the last four miles. It was, then, somewhat with a mix of horror and relief that I received the 'YOU HAVE GOT A PLACE IN THE LONDON MARATHON' magazine (that's how they do it these days) three days after that 4h24m episode round the New Forest. I would be running another marathon - but I'd get the chance to do it right this time.
Work colleagues aside, I feel as though I've been fairly restrained in how much I talk to people about the fact that I'm running the marathon. I have been running 6 days a week for some time now so one facebook post a week (say) seems in proportion to me. When the honest answer to 'what are you doing tonight?' is 'going for a run' 85% of the time, it's hard not to talk about it!
Several people donated large sums of money to my New Forest Marathon attempt so I would like to thank the following for their support: J.Brown, H.Williams, J.Anthony, A.Wright, A.Scorey, J.Martin, SJT, K.Simon, C.Arnold, W.Napier, J.Harfield, S.Rowen, G.Fluke and J.Hunt. (sorry if I have forgotten you!)
If you're in that list, please consider yourself wonderfully charitable people.
Finally, I would just like to say that I am fundraising through Givey as they donate the full 12.50 of a 10.00 (+Giftaid) donation to the charity. MSF will push 87% of your donation straight into the field, 9% back into fundraising and 4% on admin costs. Any donations will be going to:
Natural disasters - helping people in the aftermath of natural catastrophes
War/Conflict areas - providing surgery and general healthcare for people affected by armed conflicts
Humanitarian crisis - treating people with epidemic/endemic diseases and those excluded from healthcare.
The London Marathon is the largest fundraising event on the planet.
Please chuck in your wallets!
With thanks & best wishes,
Tom
P.s. I did not beat Dyfan Dwyfors marathon time last year and I dont recommend chasing another mans time when training for a marathon. The title is in jest although if I see him on the Mall
