Ben Arnold is raising £500 for MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT
About
Anyone who knows me will understand that I don't have a lot of time for people asking for sponsorship for things that they enjoy and would be doing regardless of the drive to raise money. I had said to myself that if I were to ever raise money it would be doing something that I really didn't want to do, like sky-diving or being enthusiastic. As such, it is somewhat hypocritical of me to be asking for your money in return for me running 13.1 miles. Everyone's a hypocrite in one way or another, so why should I be any different? Stop judging me and give me your money. To be clear: I enjoy running and had signed up for the half marathon anyway. Having said that, it will be hard work and more than a little painful (if that helps at all). I take part in several organised events a year and I don't think I've bothered you for sponsorship since I did the London Marathon in 2006 (or 2007 - I forget). Since that time, I will have run countless 10K races and the odd half marathon, all for free! I am moved to raise money for Macmillan because they are the sort of charity that the world needs and whose very existence brings me comfort. Many of us will have cancer at some point in our lives and it may well even be the thing that kills us. Macmillan and charities of their ilk provide support to cancer patients and their families and afford them comfort and dignity in their time of need. I am also motivated, in no small part, but the sad passing of Cat's Uncle Mike who died this morning (10th Feb), a few short months after being diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. I have huge admiration for the bravery and good humour with which he faced his illness. I will be thinking of him as I trudge round the course and again as I enjoy a post-run beer. Essentially, I am just asking you to give money to a very worthwhile cause, given that I'll be running whether you sponsor me or not. I do, however, promise to run faster if you donate.
