Hello friends!

From 24th May 2020, we will be undertaking the biggest physical challenge of our lives - a 500km cycle ride across Malawi over 8 days. We are both training hard for this and would really appreciate anything you can donate to help spur us on!

We are doing the cycle as part of a group fundraiser to raise awareness and donations for Sam's Village, a project run by African Vision Malawi (AVM). Sam's Village was made possible by a legacy - the parents of Sam Hayes wanted to make a positive difference after he tragically died in September 2013 at the age of 23. Working with AVM, which was started in 2005, they set up a training village in Sam's name. Through this hub, hundreds of people in Malawi have already been taught the vocational & life skills needed to support their families, and we hope it will continue to help thousands more.

The 10-acre village is self-sustaining and training programmes include carpentry, tailoring, basic electronics, organic farming, reforestation, education, nutrition, healthcare and HIV prevention. These ambitious courses, designed to help people get out of poverty, are supported by UNESCO through their EU STEP Program. AVM believes that Sam's Village will become a best-practice example for Malawi - and in time other parts of Africa - on how to encourage and develop sustainable, forward-looking and skilled communities.

We have both supported AVM financially for a while, as it is run by Nigel & Heather Palmer who are committed congregation members of St Matthews Surbiton. We are paying our own costs to participate, so all of the money we raise will go directly to AVM. Anything you can give would be gratefully received, and will help to keep us motivated on the ride when our saddles start to get a little sore!
