one of the most powerful and urgent pieces of human rights theatre ever made. The Herald
On the night of December 16th 2012 a young woman and her male friend boarded a bus in urban Delhi heading for home. What followed, changed the lives of these two people and countless others forever. Internationally acclaimed playwright and director Yael Farber creates a searing new work that cracks open the cone of silence around women whose lives have been shattered by gender-based violence.
NIRBHAYA is a play, but it also a call for societal change. In NIRBHAYA the play, the rape and death of 16th December serves as the catalyst for each performer to bravely come forward and break their silence- recounting their own intimate and personal experiences of sexual and gender-based violence, empowering audiences to break their own silence By refusing to remain silent any longer, each testimony challenges the core belief prevalent in so many societies that sexual violence is the fault of the victim. The loss of honour, the resulting shame belongs to the perpetrator. The result is transformational theatre with the power to be a catalyst for change. In an intimate venue with the opportunity for discussion afterwards, Nirbhaya could start to change the world Guardian
NIRBHAYAS vision is to do nothing less than CHANGE THE WORLD by ending the silence on sexual violence and creating a fear-free society. NIRBHAYA moves, inspires and speaks for enduring change. It is a call to arms. It is an invitation to witness these performers tell NIRBHAYA's story and honour her by breaking their silence thereby inspiring audiences everywhere to break theirs.
With your help, we will raise the funds to take NIRBHAYA across the world to places where it can serve as a catalyst to change the lives of women and men. Our hope is for a revolution by lifting the veil of silence on sexual violence.
We want to return to India to engage broader audiences visiting other cities and new communities, to return to the UK for a multi-city tour, to take the project to South Africa which of course shares the staggeringly high sexual violence statistics with India, and beyond.
