In March, the Leicester Nutritank Society committee are challenging ourselves to buy a whole week's food shop for just £10! Food poverty is a huge issue in the UK, with an estimated 8.4 million people struggling to get enough to eat. In 2019-2020 a record high of around 2 million people used a food bank. In 2020, UNICEF had to feed children in the UK for the first time in its 70 year history. Asylum seekers are particularly vulnerable, with over 1000 asylum seekers living in relative poverty in Leicester alone. Leicester City of Sanctuary aims to support asylum seekers and refugees in and around Leicester to help them rebuild their lives, develop their skills and feel a part of the community.
