JS BACH, ST JOHN PASSION, CHORAL MASTERPIECE Sunday 22nd March, 7.15pm9.15pm. Bar opens from 6pm. As one of the highlights of the Barnes Music Festival (www.barnesmusicfestival.com), we join a stellar cast of musicians for a performance of one of the greatest sacred choral works ever written. St Michaels Church, Barnes will provide the atmospheric setting for this dramatic choral work, which will be accompanied by period instruments. The performance will be directed by Martin Neary who has conducted works by Bach at the BBC Proms. He will bring together an outstanding team of musicians, including star of the opera stage and concert platform, James Bowman; and Robert Murray, internationally acclaimed for his opera, lieder and concert work. They will be joined by celebrated soloists, alongside the English Chamber Singers, the St Michaels Church Choir and distinguished period instrumentalists, many of whom play with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Performed two weeks before Easter, Father Paul the vicar of St Michaels says: This is a piece of music written to be sung in church. Its highly dramatic, and takes its text from St Johns gospel to tell the last hours of Christs life. All proceeds will go to the charities of St Michaels and the Barnes Music Festival, but the cost of such a prestigious occasion is considerable at 10,000.
