Hopes and Beams is a multi-award-winning charity based in Broad Street, Crewe. We provide education, activities, sporting and social opportunities for children and young people who have physical, sensory or learning disabilities. We create an inclusive space for youngsters to play, train and make friends in a fun and safe environment, where everyone is welcome, valued and important. At Hopes and Beams, the ethos is to look at each individual’s ability rather than their disability. We have a reputation as a leading provider of sports training for disabled people, with many of our athletes achieving medals at local, regional, national and international competitions such as the World Special Olympic Games. However, more important are the achievements that many children and young people accomplish every week at Hopes and Beams from overcoming personal challenges. In all of our activities we aim to improve children’s ‘skills for life’ through building on what they can already do by improving skills in their chosen activity alongside listening and attention, problem solving and social skills. This all contributes to a young person’s confidence and self-esteem that they can carry forward into other areas of their lives. Hopes and Beams also provides activities for senior members of the community which are Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s-friendly. We have also been successful at bringing many people together through our well-established community restaurant, Poppy’s, which cooks and serves homemade food aimed at older members of the community. Poppy’s Restaurant is non-for-profit with all money going toward Hopes and Beams’ charitable activities and has proudly received a 5-star rating from the Food Standards Agency every year since opening.
