Will shaving my head of curly hair cure AIDS?
No, but with your generosity it will help in the fight. There is a new vaccine, Nevirapine, which has been proven to prevent the transfer of AIDS from an expectant mother to her child at birth. This drug is a safe anti retro viral drug for pregnant mothers and newborns, but has to be administered in a safe environment, so to do this it is hoped to build a Maternity and Ante-natal clinic in a rural area of South West Uganda. This is an area where AIDS is widespread and has been the cause of so many deaths resulting in many children being orphaned without anyone to care for them. The land to build the Maaya Antenatal and Maternity Unit has been given, however, the building funds have yet to be raised.
So why help you may ask? Surely if the people control their urges then AIDS will die out anyway. That to me is a “bury your head in the sand” attitude. Everyone is different, other cultures are different, yet with help and continuing educational guidance concepts are changing, but it takes time.
The Mission Committee of St Thomas a Becket Church, working with Friends of North Kigezi Diocese, a UK registered charity No. 1114602, has been helping this area with various schemes over several years, and is making a huge difference to the local area. Please let’s try to help a little bit more.
I, Di Pitts, am willing to do my bit, but will you help me. For the price of a cup of coffee, or a magazine, I propose to have my head of curly hair shaved in exchange for your donations. The deed is to be done during the churches fete, namely Saturday 17th June, IF we can raise £1,000 – yes it seems a lot, but if everyone could spare the price of a cup of coffee then together we can do it, and surely the good feeling of success would be worth it.
Please join me in helping to make a difference, because from little acorns big oak trees grow.
