Andrea Potter is raising £500 for mASCot
About
Many of you that know me will know that I run a lot. Running the London marathon on Sunday will be an extra special race for me because I will be running it for my daughter Lottie and to raise money for Mascot, a charity in Brighton that provides support for autistic children and their families. I became aware of the amazing work this charity does when Lottie was diagnosed with autism last year and by fundraising for them, I want to be able to help the organisation support as many people as possible. Going through the assessment and diagnosis process with Lottie has opened my eyes to all the wonderful things that being autistic can bring and I see them everyday in my smart, sensitive and super inquisitive daughter. Her beautiful mind experiences and feels life in incredible depth. She spots details other miss and can retain information on an staggering scale. But experiencing life at such an intensity can have a negative side too, emotions and environments can overwhelm her and whilst we try to help her see the strengths and positive parts of her condition we can’t pretend that life won’t be challenging for her. That she will need to navigate a world ‘not made for me’. We know that people with autism are more like to struggle in many areas of their life, in education and with their mental health and physical health. We feel so thankful that Lottie was able to be diagnosed but know that the NHS is massively overwhelmed and many people are facing waits of over 4 years for an assessment. With the NHS so stretched, the work of charities like Mascot is even more important than ever. On Sunday I’ll be running for my daughter Lottie so she knows that we will always br her biggest supporters and for Mascot so they can continue to provide support to autistic children in our local area. If you are able to donate a few pounds towards a great cause where the money is directly used to support young people and their families I would be eternally grateful.
