I am raising money for Heads Above The Waves (HATW) in Cardiff. To raise funds and awareness, I am taking on a monumental challenge of running my first 100-mile race called, The Epona. I've run my fair share of ultra's but 100 has always been a milestone I've aimed for - HATW will be my 'reason why'. This is a 100 mile run with 17,000ft of elevation across 23 peaks in total, including all 3 of the South Wales Peaks (Sugar Loaf, Skirrid Fawr & Blorenge). Every step I take is a stride towards breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and providing essential resources for those in need. Please read on to find out why i have chosen this amazing charity. HATW are a not-for-profit community interest programme that exists to raise awareness about self harm and encourage creative alternative coping mechanisms. The aim is to make everyone feel able to talk honestly and openly about mental health, know where to find help when they need it and find what works for them in the bad days. They sell amazing merchandise that has powerful messages behind their designs, aiming to use those designs as a starting point for a converstion. HATW run and attend events all across the UK starting conversations and distributing literature about support that's available. Over the last year, we've started introducing workshops into schools and youth groups - it's one thing to post online about creative coping mechanisms, but the next step is actually letting young people try it out for themselves.
