Ebola is no longer simply a medical emergency, but threatens to become a humanitarian catastrophe. According to the World Health Organisation, nearly 5,000 people have died and more than 10,000 have been infected with Ebola since the start of the year. The real numbers could be up to three times higher. Infection rates continue to grow in Sierra Leone and Liberia. WHO estimates that there could be 5,000 10,000 new cases a week in the worst affected countries by December. On November 29th, we are running our own Marathon around the Thames in London, to raise money for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) an independent, neutral and impartial humanitarian charity working in over 60 countries around the world, and one of the main front-line medical teams working against Ebola in West Africa, with 3,414 staff working in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Ben Whybrow and Tom Worsley are running the entire 26.2 mile loop, starting and ending at the London Eye, while others are joining for various distances along the way. MSF exists to save lives by providing medical aid where it is needed most in armed conflicts, epidemics, famines and natural disasters. All these situations call for a rapid response with specialised medical and logistical help. They also run longer-term projects, tackling health crises and supporting people where the need is greatest.
