For almost 20 years, the Dreamscheme team have been working alongside young people from disadvantaged housing estates in Northern Ireland. As of 2022, more than 150 teenagers are being supported every week across 5 communities. Children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to experience poor material outcomes, poor health, and do worse in their education. They also have poorer social and emotional outcomes, including lower self-belief and are more likely to report multiple health complaints. Beyond disadvantage, young people in general are facing a major crisis of mental health, with Northern Ireland reporting the highest prevalence of mental health problems in the UK. In response, Dreamscheme is creating spaces at the heart of local communities where young people can thrive. Through a mix of evening youth programmes, after-school cafes, creative projects, residentials and an overseas camp, Dreamscheme offers something of long-term valuable to young people: Community → where young people can grow together with a few good friends Work → where young people can learn skills and do meaningful work Experiences → where young people can have defining moments Along the way, we have a team of mentors ready to support young people 1:1 or in small groups, helping them overcome barriers to growth and make the most of the Dreamscheme journey. With a Christian ethos, we seek the good of young people in the name of Christ and believe in the power of enduring, practical love for those in need. Any finances raised will help Dreamscheme benefit more young people, specifically by covering the costs for our 1:1 mentoring programme where disadvantaged young people receive one session of mentoring every week for the course of a school term.
