Saving Westgate Chapel
Westgate Chapel in Weardale, Co. Durham, is Grade II* listed and dates from 1871; it is within the North Pennines AONB. Its adjoining schoolroom was the original chapel in the early 19th century. Westgate closed in 2007 and in 2009 passed to Historic Chapels Trust, acquirer of last resort of non-Anglican religious buildings. Major repairs were completed by HCT, including emergency to repairs to make the roof watertight. Ironically, as the interior dried out, the plaster ceiling cracked and is now collapsing, threatening the important organ beneath.
Help us by making a donation to support the urgent restoration of one of County Durham’s few Grade II* listed chapels.
