Eighteen months ago I struggled to run a bath without getting out of breath... On April 19th I will be running the 26.2 miles of the Manchester Marathon in aid of an Ethiopian project that looks after children whose parents have been imprisoned. The children of prisoners often live in the prison with their parents, as there is no social services to look after them. The prison budgets cannot afford to provide the extra food for the children to eat. The children will often miss out on their schooling and having a life outside of the prison. Twinkle of Hope provides a basic diet and education for the children of prisoners and also gives them a safe place to learn and play. Much of the crime that led to the parents imprisonment was poverty related and this project also allows for their mothers to learn skills that will mean they do not have to commit crime to survive when they are released.
