If you think running a marathon sounds difficult, imagine how much more difficult that distance - all 26.2 miles of it - would seem if you were completing it by running over 100 laps of the same circuit...
This is what Adam Pettitt, Highgate's Head, will be attempting on Friday 22 May: a marathon around Junior Field. Starting bright and early at 6.30am, Mr Pettitt will be joined on the last lap by our Chaplain, Fr. Robert, who completed his first ever 5k run one week ago!
Mr Pettitt wants to use this to raise awareness of, and funds for, an important cause: combating digital poverty in our Chrysalis Partner Schools.
With schools closed and pupils studying online, the social gap in access to technology is stark. Although our Chrysalis Partner Schools have bought laptops to lend to some of the neediest Year 12 pupils, there are still hundreds of children who have little or no access to a computer, who cannot access their education adequately during lockdown. Most of these pupils are on free school meals, where the digital divide mostly correlates.
So the idea was born: laps for laptops! With Gift Aid, 400 Highgate families sponsoring Mr Pettitt £25 would provide these schools with 60 Chromebooks.
