Remember Colonel Hathi's march from The Jungle Book? Well, when I took the Cub name 'Hathi' two years ago as a Section Assistant for the Cubs I never imagined that I would be running a marathon! Truth be told, running a marathon has long been an ambition of mine and I can think of no better way to celebrate the 40th birthday of 3rd Olton Scout Group and, as it happens, my own 'quadragesimo' on 22 August. As many visitors to the site will know, it was to be the London Marathon on 26th April 2015. However, I have recently been informed that an 'admin error' on the part of the London Marathon organisers means there is no actual place for me! Tragedy? No! I will instead be running the Shakespeare Marathon on 26 April in Stratford-upon-Avon, so All's Well That Ends Well! Needless to say, for me the Shakespeare Marathon will not be a race! Winning is not an option!! The victory will be crossing the finish line and, most importantly, raising as much money as possible for the young people of 3rd Olton Scout Group, to make their experience of scouting as good as it can possibly be. Every pound I raise will be invested in the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of 3rd Olton. In recent years, the Group has flourished and grown owing to the dedication of its leaders and assistants (all volunteers). Today, more than 50 young people aged 6-14 are members and we will use the money to enrich their experience of the great outdoors and give them skills for life. While training for the marathon, the loneliness of the long-distance runner has struck, so I am challenging the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to run the marathon distance too! Not enough space to explain all here, but just so you know that I am not the only who is running for 3rd Olton. Thank you for your support!
