20 year ago - in October 2001 - the Kangaroo Club charity helped me and my family navigate a tricky time. Following a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis aged 13 I had been undergoing treatment for 4 years without much success, and the medical team advised us that we'd come to the end of the line for medical treatment and I would need to have my colon removed. In July 2001 I had the first part of this surgery which resulted in me having a colostomy bag, and in October that year I had the second part of the surgery which allowed me to live without this and instead create an internal pouch using part of my small intestine.
This surgery was life-changing and we'll forever be grateful for the brilliant surgical team, but living with a pouch brings its own challenges, adjustments and changes. This is where the Kangaroo club step in. From their mildly humorous name which it took my Dad a while to get (yep, me and the Kangaroos have a pouch in common!) to their super helpful online FAQs, their in-person information days and their dedicated and brilliant team who are always there for you, they make such a difference. The Kangaroo club is a small and little known charity but they make such a huge difference to those of us who are always learning about how to live life to the full with a pouch.
That's why me, my super Dad and wonderful husband are running the Newport 10k on 24th October 2021. We hope to raise some money for this great cause and any sponsorship you can give would be SO appreciated and will help keep us going :)
