Hello! Thank you for visiting our 2.6 fundraising page for Starling. Starling is a new charity set up to support neurodiverse young people through providing creative projects that focus on wellbeing, identity and empowerment. Neurodiverse or neurodivergent describes anyone with a uniquely functioning brain. This means you think, see and experience the world differently to others. It also means that you communicate in a different way to most other people. If you are neurodivergent you might be Autistic, Dyspraxic, Dyslexic, or have ADHD, mental health issues or have experienced trauma in your childhood. We think being neurodivergent is a superpower and should be celebrated! Many neurodivergent people have gone on to do incredible and amazing things! However, being neurodivergent can also have it's challenges because the majority of the world is set up for 'neurotypical' people. It means that neurodiverse young people can find it difficult to relate to others, and can become very isolated. Many neurodiverse young people experience anxiety and depression, and often find it difficult to get jobs or stay in education. Autistic young people are 4 times more likely to be socially isolated than the general public (National Autistic Society, 2018), and those young people who have experienced Developmental Trauma (i.e. Adverse Childhood Experiences) are 4.5 times more likely to have depression (NHS, 2018). This is why Starling was set up - to try to explore what it is to be neurodivergent in creative ways and use this help individuals progress, and to raise awareness of what being a neurodiverse young person is. Through our first year of delivering projects we have worked with over 100 young people in 3 boroughs of Greater Manchester. 80% said that they have increased their self-esteem and 76% say they have increased their communication skills since taking part. We are only very small charity and through these uncertain times we would like to feel confident we can continue to deliver our work to our participants. We would also like to set up projects in other areas to support more young people across Greater Manchester. We hope you can support us! We have an amazing team of fundraisers completing 5 challenges. Each person set themselves a challenge based on what they felt would be most difficult for them as individuals - we love individual diversity here! Ed will be running (or walking) 26km in 7 days Lois will be doing yoga for 20 mins and meditation for 6 mins everyday for 7 days Katie will be walking/running 26 miles in 7 days Rosa will be cycling on the turbo trainer 260km in 2.6 days Kerrie will be walking 26km in 2.6 days We hope you can help us reach our target and thank you so much for your support!!!
